2010 Jaguar XK Review
Jaguar coupes have never been known for swift evolutionary changes. The XK8 was in production for 10 years, the XK-E made it to 13 and the XJS survived to the ripe old age of 21. In human years, that would be like living to see your 225th birthday. However, with the brand first on the brink of being flushed down the corporate drain and now under ambitious new Indian ownership, Jaguar can no longer afford to let its halo car rest on its laurels for years on end. That's why the 2010 Jaguar XK boasts major changes for both coupe and convertible versions. One significant complaint we've had regarding the XK in the past couple of years has been the lackluster 300-horsepower output from the base V8. For 2010, the XK features an all-new 5.0-liter direct-injected V8. With 385 hp, it's putting out 15 more hp than the heavier BMW 650i and 3 more than the much heavier Mercedes SL550. The supercharged Jaguar XKR never drew any criticisms for its 410-hp V8, but we welcome with open arms this year's supercharged 5.0-liter mill with its upgrade to 510 horses. Given the fact that it has 10 more horses and 80 more pound-feet of torque than a BMW M6, the new XKR should be one wild kick in the teeth. But there's more than just a power boost for 2010. Jaguar Drive Control, a new feature this year, offers the driver a choice of three different modes to alter the car's sporting responses via attributes such as throttle response, shift speed and suspension settings. The adjustable suspension with adaptive dampers is also new, and it's been designed to maximize ride comfort and handling prowess depending on driving conditions. An electronically controlled limited-slip rear differential is another new feature this year. Design-wise, there are slight adjustments to the exterior to bring a more aggressive and coherent look to the Jag's fascias, while the interior features a welcome supply of improved materials. Finally, the 2010 XK receives the XF sedan's trick rotary gear selection knob, which elegantly rises out of the center console upon ignition. Overall, Jaguar has really upped its game with the 2010 XK coupe and convertible. The power boost, additional standard equipment and more elegant-looking interior have made the XK fully competitive against already impressive players like the BMW 650i and M6, Mercedes-Benz SL550 and SL63 AMG, and Porsche's 911. It's also worth noting that the XK is less expensive than its principal competitors. The 2010 Jaguar XK has already evolved far beyond its original iteration -- let's hope Jag doesn't let it rest on its laurels for the next 17 years.

Walkaround
The 2010 Jaguar XK is available in coupe and convertible body styles, with each offered in XK and XKR trim levels. Standard equipment on the base car includes 19-inch alloy wheels, bi-xenon headlights, front and rear parking sensors, keyless ignition/entry, leather upholstery, power-adjustable front seats, a heated power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats and automatic dual-zone climate control. Also standard are a touchscreen control interface, Bluetooth, a navigation system and a Bowers & Wilkins premium surround-sound system with in-dash six-CD changer, satellite radio and USB audio interface. The convertible features a power-retractable soft top and power rear windows. Options include adaptive headlights, adaptive cruise control and HD radio. These items are standard on the XKR, as are a supercharged engine, different 19-inch wheels, bigger brakes, and unique interior and exterior trim. Optional on both the XK and XKR are 20-inch wheels and different interior veneers.

Summary
Sent through corners, both the standard 2010 Jaguar XK and the XKR display the advantages of aluminum construction, as both versions of the car feel more agile than their predecessors. The new automatically adjustable suspension constantly maximizes ride comfort or handling, depending on the situation. Still, with its suspension biased toward a plush ride, the XK isn't as responsive on a twisty road as a Porsche 911. If you want something that will comfortably eat up hundreds of highway miles while occasionally venturing onto a scenic back road, though, the XK is ideal.

Jaguar has redesigned its flagshipsedan, the XJ, for the 2010 model year, giving it exterior and interiordesign in the style of the XF sedan, along with the new enginesintroduced for the 2010 XF. The XJ competes in the full-size luxuryclass along with the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS 460 andMercedes-Benz S-Class. Jaguar has finally given tradition a rest,abandoning the classic four-headlight front-end design that dates backdecades and that had long appeared unchanged to the untrained eyedespite a complete redesign in 2004. The 2010's nose is a more balancedexecution of the XF's prominent mesh grille and sculpted headlightclusters. The hood is dramatically domed and creased, an apparent trendacross the market. Viewed from the rear, the XJ would beindistinguishable as a Jaguar were it not for the large and perfectlycentered chrome "leaper" emblem. The taillights look like someonegrabbed a Bentley by the tail and stretched it vertically. The carlooks coupe-like in profile, with a gradually sloping roofline, highrear deck and high beltline. It's more Mercedes CLS than 2009 XJ. Anotable feature is the blacked-out C-pillars (the pillars that flankthe rear window). They give a floating-roof look that's drawn mixedreviews.

Options
The interior also gotthe full XF treatment, with a more modern design, piano-black andchrome surfaces, the JaguarDrive gear selector that motors up from thecenter console, and virtual gauges on a 12.3-inch display. Though thetech is high, the gauges still appear as classic analog, thoughdifferent instruments can be emphasized based on conditions. It's a mixof old and new, which the interior as a whole attempts to accomplishwith familiar rich leather, as well as wood trim that runs in acontinuous line from the door panels across the top of the dashboard.Jaguar emphasizes the feeling of light and space inside thanks to astandard panoramic glass roof. The long-wheelbase XJL offers 5 moreinches of backseat legroom. The XJ and XJL come with a standard5.0-liter V-8 rated at 385 horsepower. The supercharged version of this5.0-liter engine makes 470 hp in the Supercharged trim level and 510 hpin the Supersport. Jaguar's claimed zero-to-60 mph times are 5.4, 4.9and 4.7 seconds, respectively. Though it shares its newdirect-injection power plants and six-speed automatic transmission withthe XF, Jaguar says the larger XJ's swift sprints come courtesy of asimilar aerodynamic drag coefficient and lightweight aluminumconstruction. The XJ also includes an air-spring suspension andautomatically controlled shock absorbers that vary firmness asconditions dictate.

Recent Jags were seemingly designed to cater to what people think a Jag should be, namely, a quaint motorcar that looks just like the quaint motorcar that came before it. The XF leaves those people in its dust, establishing a bold new stylistic direction for Jaguar. Traditional virtues like powerful engines and a sumptuous cabin remain, but the XF's contemporary shape sets it apart as a Jag for the 21st century. Despite receiving a warm welcome in its first production year, when an XF Supercharged defeated segment stalwarts from Audi, BMW and Mercedes in an Edmunds comparison test, the XF lineup receives some notable changes for 2010. The base model's 4.2-liter V8 stays the same, but the 420-hp supercharged 4.2-liter V8 and its corresponding trim level -- the victorious car in the above-mentioned shootout -- are no more. In its place are two new trim levels. The XF Premium comes with an all-new, naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 that pumps out 385 hp, and the 2010 Jaguar XFR storms onto the scene with a supercharged version of the 5.0-liter V8 that delivers a towering 510 hp and 461 pound-feet of torque. Along with the gutsier engine, the XFR also boasts quicker steering, bigger brakes, 20-inch wheels, unique exterior and interior styling and trim and automatically adjustable suspension damper settings for optimized ride and handling. While we did think highly of last year's Supercharged model, the two new models should fill in nicely for a car that's established itself as a class standout. The XF Premium will hold strong appeal for the typical luxury car buyer, and the XFR is clearly meant to give cars like the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG a run for their money. Any 2010 Jaguar XF deserves a place on your "to drive" list if you're considering a sedan in this price segment. It's not without its quirks and detractors, but nothing can match the XF's blend of sophisticated road manners, high-tech features and signature British interior ambience.

Around corners, the XF has considerable grip and surprisingly high limits. The steering is a little light and numb, but the XF is still more fun to drive than many competitors. Acceleration from the base V8 is swift and smooth. We haven't had the chance to drive the new naturally aspirated 5.0-liter V8 yet, but we suspect it'll provide a suitable amount of thrust -- just not as much as the lusciously smooth supercharged V8 found in last year's XF. However, for those who desire a Jaguar with real claws, the 510-hp XFR will no doubt satisfy. It generates heroic power as well as capable and entertaining handling.

The current XK represents the first step in redefining Jaguar for the 21st century. Although it certainly includes design details inspired by Jag's storied past, this is an all-new kitty.Oh, there's plenty of felled tree on display, but it complements the more modern design rather than dominating it -- aluminum trim is even available. This newfound design direction is refreshing, but it's the competent and refined driving manners that make the 2009 Jaguar XK a serious player in the realm of sub-$100,000 luxury coupes and more than just a quaint fashion accessory.The XK sets itself apart by boasting an all-aluminum structure and body panels that make it not only lighter than the XK8 it replaced, but also less portly than its competitors. Jaguar also claims that the aluminum structure adds body stiffness for improved handling . While we took a pass on testing the validity of that last assertion, we can confirm that ride and handling are certainly class-competitive.The lighter weight also pays dividends with the XK 's pair of V8 engines, although the base 300-horsepower mill doesn't impress as much as it might have 10 years ago. On the other hand, the 420- hp supercharged XKR has a whole Costco case of oomph on hand for matching (or dispatching) competitors like the BMW 650i , Mercedes-Benz SL550 and Porsche 911. That strong straight-line performance doesn't mean this Jaguar coupe and convertible can quite match those cars in terms of being fun to drive -- it is more of a grand tourer with the ability to casually tackle a curvy road. However, this year's new XKR Dynamic Handling Package should certainly narrow the gap with more athletic competitors, especially the BMW 6 Series. In a recent comparison test with the BMW, we ranked the XK coupe 2nd due to its higher price and relative lack of performance and practicality. However, the 2009 Jaguar XK and XKR should strike a chord among those seeking out high style and a certain type of heritage and prestige -- even if there's not as much lacquered tree to show off.

Body Styles, Trim Levels, and Options
The 2009 Jaguar XK is a luxury sports car available in coupe and convertible body styles. There are two trim levels that correspond with engine selection. 2009 Jaguar XJ8 Review
The 2009 Jaguar XJ brims with style, character and tradition. While German rivals might boast precision, efficiency and a number of high-tech gizmos befitting a space shuttle, comparing the XJ to one of its Continental competitors would be like pitting an old comfy wingback against one of those stark leather and metal chairs from Mike Myers' "Saturday Night Live" sketch "Sprockets." Not that we're condemning the XJ to a retirement community somewhere in Florida. On the contrary, this British sedan's unique brand of old-world charm, new-world driving dynamics and relative simplicity has a special appeal to members of any generation.

Features and Options
The 2009 Jaguar XJ is available in five trim levels: base XJ8, XJ8 L (long wheelbase), ultra-luxurious Vanden Plas, performance-oriented XJR and the Super V8, which combines the plush appointments of the Vanden Plas with the supercharged performance of the XJR. Standard equipment on the XJ8 and XJ8L includes 19-inch wheels, an adaptive suspension, xenon headlamps, front and rear park assist, a sunroof, auto-dimming and heated mirrors, dual-zone climate control, 14-way power front seats with driver memory functions, a power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, heated front and rear seats, leather upholstery, burl walnut trim, a power rear sunshade, Bluetooth, a navigation system and a 12-speaker Alpine stereo with a CD player. The XJ8L differs only in its extra rear-seat space. Many of the features that are standard on higher trim levels are optional on the XJ8 and XJ8 L. The 2009 Vanden Plas is available in long-wheelbase form only and adds power folding mirrors, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled front seats, fold-down rear-seat picnic tables, lambswool rugs and extra veneer trim.

Summary
The 300-hp V8 won't knock your socks off, but it still provides plenty of low-range and midrange power to forcefully push this rear-wheel-drive sedan off the line and make highway passing a breeze. With the supercharged engine, it's practically a hurricane as power surges forth effortlessly. In both versions, however, the six-speed auto is a little too eager to fling itself into 6th gear (presumably for fuel economy), requiring frequent downshifts. For such a large car, the 2009 Jaguar XJ actually handles quite well and -- particularly with the XJR and its 20-inch wheels -- features a ride that's on the firm side among large luxury sedans. Still, with its active suspension system, the XJ still delivers the comfort that folks expect from a car wearing a Jaguar badge.

2009 Jaguar Review
The Jaguar XK is largely credited with getting the British luxury brand back on track. With its sleek, sexy styling, Jag's sports coupe is both a departure from the stodgy designs that plagued the company for years and heir apparent to Jaguar's legendary 1960s E-Type. The XKR Coupe adds an extra 120 horsepower to the XK's pussy-footing 300 ponies and comes with an ample array of in-cabin tech, much of it standard equipment -- which is the way it should be on a car costing close to six figures. The only tech option on our test car (sticker price $91,225) was $750 for the Bowers & Wilkins Premium Sound System, which is well worth the extra dough. But for the $2,300 Luxury package, which mostly adds lots of extra leather and wood to the interior, not so much. The B&W sound system debuted on the Jaguar XF last year and is now available in this pick of the litter. It's easily one of the top OEM systems available in what is becoming an increasingly crowded field of name-brand high-end audio offerings in luxury cars. While this one isn't as sweet-sounding as the B&W system in the XF -- and seems added as an afterthought rather than designed for the car, as in the XF -- it's far superior to the standard Alpine audio system. The single-CD system handled my tough test tracks fairly well, leaving only a few audiophile nits to pick: the lowest bass notes were overbearing, strong midbass caused the door-mounted speakers to distort in protest, highs could be a bit brittle and vocals weren't entirely transparent. The soundstage was relatively high and imaging was for the most part distinct, no doubt aided by the center-channel speaker sitting on top of the dash. And I like that Jaguar allows a choice between listening in three-channel mode, with Dolby Pro Logic II processing engaged or plain old stereo. The XKR's touch-screen makes the audio system (and other features of the car) a cinch to operate, unlike the circular toggle controls on the steering wheel for volume up/down and track skip forward/back, which are too close together and similar sized. Nothing is more of a buzz-kill than going to crank up a song just as you're ready to really jam -- only to hit the adjacent track-skip knob instead. Call it musicus interruptus, if you follow my drift. iPod integration is also on board through a proprietary connector and cable in the center console, along with a USB port. (Strangely, the XKR doesn't come with an aux-in connector.) Once an iPod is connected, access to the device's music menu is available via the touch-screen, and music files on a USB stick are cataloged and presented in a menu structure similar to that of an iPod. Either way, it makes managing digital music files easy and intuitive. Bluetooth hands-free is equally straightforward and hassle-free -- and standard equipment. I had no problem pairing my phone, and the address book was automatically downloaded as well, allowing me to dial by pressing a name on the touchscreen. But that the car doesn't have voice-activation for phone calls -- or for any other functions, although it does have steering-wheel controls for initiating and ending calls -- is inexcusable in this day of Ford Sync-equipped econo-boxes. And when you're driving a powerful supercharged sports cars like the XKR, it's essential to be able to make a call, change albums or switch to satellite radio without removing your hands from the wheel and looking away from the road. But better yet, there's a "Do Not Disturb" feature in the phone menu to keep intruders at bay while you're enjoying a favorite route.

Summary
The XKR's DVD navigation system works well, although it's not exactly cutting-edge, and the touch-screen interface adds a level of convenience often lacking in systems with only a central controller, as in BMW and Mercedes vehicles. Our test car also came with gadgets such as front and rear parking aid (which gives audible warnings as well as visual indication on the touch-screen to show how close you are to an object) and a heated steering wheel (which is part of the Luxury option package). Our test car didn't come with adaptive cruise control, which has a feature called Forward Alert to warn drivers when they're too close to a vehicle in front whether ACC is on or not. Like the strong statement the Jaguar XKR makes in terms of styling, and complementing the fact that it can run with the big dogs of its segment, the car is on par if not ahead of the pack in terms of technology. Just as importantly, its tech toys rarely detract from enjoying the thrill of driving this fast cat.
